After this Trump statement shocked to everyone.
In a bold and controversial move, former U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order for the United States to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO). President Donald Trump said on Monday (January 20, 2025), saying the global health agency had mishandled the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises.
Why Did Trump Withdraw from the WHO?
Trump’s withdrawal from the WHO is not unexpected. He took steps to quit the body in 2020, during his first term as president, accusing the World Health Organization of aiding China’s efforts to “mislead the world” about the origins of COVID.
The U.S. contributed nearly $400 million annually to the WHO—about 15% of the organization’s total funding. Trump felt that this money wasn’t being used effectively and accused the World Health Organization of being slow to respond to the pandemic. He also claimed the organization allowed China to influence its decisions, leading to what he called “a disastrous global health response.”
Reactions to the Decision
The move sparked immediate backlash. Health experts, world leaders, and even members of Trump’s own party criticized the decision, warning that it could weaken global health efforts. Many worried about how this would affect poorer countries that rely on WHO support for vaccines, medical supplies, and disease prevention.
Domestically, public health officials argued that withdrawing from the World Health Organization could leave the U.S. less prepared for future pandemics. Democratic lawmakers condemned the decision and vowed to reverse it if given the chance.
World Health Organization Director- General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed disappointment, urging the U.S. to reconsider. “Now is the time for unity, not division,” he said.
