New Delhi Railway Station Stampede: 15 Dead, Several Injured

A tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on February 15, 2025, led to the deaths of 15 people, including women and children, while many others were injured. The incident happened around 8:00 PM on platform 14, where thousands of passengers were rushing to board trains heading to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
The crowd became uncontrollable due to train delays and overcrowding, resulting in chaos and panic. As people pushed to get onto the trains, many fell and were trampled. Emergency teams quickly arrived to help, and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Government's Response

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, saying,
“I am distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased. Wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.”
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has ordered an immediate investigation to find out what went wrong and how similar incidents can be prevented in the future. Railway authorities are now reviewing safety measures at the station.

Redevelopment Plans for New Delhi Railway Station

In a separate update, the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has reissued a ₹2,469 crore tender for the redevelopment of New Delhi Railway Station. The plan aims to make the station more modern and passenger-friendly.

Key features of the project include:

Two new station buildings on the Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate sides
A large air concourse with separate areas for arriving and departing passengers
Modern waiting lounges with better facilities
Lifts and escalators for easier movement
Improved roads to reduce traffic congestion around the station
The authorities are hopeful that this project will improve the travel experience for passengers. However, after the recent stampede, crowd management and passenger safety have become top concerns.
