A routine IndiGo flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Bengaluru turned into a nightmare for one family when a five-year-old girl’s gold necklace reportedly vanished mid-air — and shockingly, a flight attendant is now at the center of the theft investigation.
The incident came to light after Priyanka Mukherjee, mother of the child and wife of an ISRO scientist, filed a complaint upon landing at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. According to her, the necklace was last seen around her daughter’s neck during the flight — and had mysteriously disappeared by the time they reached their destination.
What makes the case alarming is the suspicion that an IndiGo crew member may be involved. The child was seated with her family throughout the journey, and the only people with access were fellow passengers and cabin crew.
Responding swiftly, the KIA police registered an FIR and have launched an investigation. Authorities are examining CCTV footage, questioning flight staff, and trying to trace the necklace’s whereabouts. The complaint specifically names a female flight attendant.
While no arrest has been made yet, police officials have confirmed that the case is being treated with urgency due to the sensitive nature of the allegation and the involvement of a minor.
IndiGo has acknowledged the issue and said it is fully cooperating with the investigation. In a brief statement, the airline reiterated its commitment to high standards of professionalism and passenger safety.
“We are extending full support to the authorities and are reviewing the matter internally. IndiGo holds zero tolerance for misconduct of any kind,” the airline said.
This case has triggered fresh concerns about rising incidents of theft linked to airline staff or airport employees. Late last year, two staffers at the Bengaluru airport were arrested for stealing valuables from luggage. In another incident, a woman was caught lifting cash and jewelry by distracting co-passengers on a flight.
With such cases stacking up, passengers are beginning to question the safety of their belongings even in supposedly secure environments like flights and airports.
As the investigation moves forward, all eyes are on Bengaluru police and IndiGo to ensure transparency and accountability. If the allegations hold true, it could result in criminal charges and a fresh wave of reforms within domestic aviation practices.
This unsettling incident serves as a wake-up call. For airlines, it’s a reminder to double down on background checks and employee monitoring. For passengers, it’s a cautionary tale to stay vigilant — even in the skies.
