In a bold and controversial move, former U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order for the United States to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO). President Donald Trump said on Monday (January 20, 2025), saying the global health agency had mishandled the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises.
Trump’s withdrawal from the WHO is not unexpected. He took steps to quit the body in 2020, during his first term as president, accusing the World Health Organization of aiding China’s efforts to “mislead the world” about the origins of COVID.
The U.S. contributed nearly $400 million annually to the WHO—about 15% of the organization’s total funding. Trump felt that this money wasn’t being used effectively and accused the World Health Organization of being slow to respond to the pandemic.
