In a surprising turn of events, South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock has announced his comeback from international retirement, set to feature in the upcoming series against Pakistan. The Proteas are scheduled to face the Men in Green in October-November 2025, with de Kock included in both the ODI and T20I squads, marking a significant boost for the team.
De Kock Ends Retirement and Joins White-Ball Squads
De Kock, who retired from 50-over cricket after the 2023 Cricket World Cup, will now return to the international stage. He last played in the T20 format at the 2024 World Cup, but his decision to rejoin the squad highlights his continued ambition to represent South Africa at the highest level.
South Africa coach Shukri Conrad shared his excitement
“Quinton’s return to the white-ball setup is a massive boost for us. When we discussed his future last month, it was clear he still has the passion and drive to contribute to the national team. His experience, talent, and leadership will be invaluable.”

De Kock’s comeback comes as South Africa gears up to co-host the 2027 Cricket World Cup alongside Zimbabwe and Namibia, with hopes of finally clinching the elusive trophy.
Pakistan Series: Tests and Leadership Changes
South Africa will begin their World Test Championship title defense with a two-Test series in Pakistan, starting October 12 in Lahore. However, the side will be without influential batter Temba Bavuma, who is sidelined due to a calf strain.
Conrad commented on Bavuma’s absence
“Naturally, we are disappointed not to have Temba available. He has been a key leader and consistent performer for us, and his presence will be missed both on and off the field.”
In Bavuma’s absence, Aiden Markram will captain the Test side. The rest of the squad remains largely unchanged from the team that lifted the World Test Championship mace against Australia at Lord’s in June.
South Africa will tour Pakistan with four spinners, though Keshav Maharaj will only be available for the second Test as he recovers from a groin injury. Simon Harmer returns to the squad, alongside spinners Senuran Muthusamy and Prenelan Subrayen.
