The Islamic month of Muharram began on Friday, June 27, 2025, after the crescent moon was sighted on the evening of June 26. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, will be observed on Sunday, July 6, 2025.

While the holiday falls on a weekend, it is still officially recognized by institutions and the government. That means several services and organizations will remain closed for the day.
Muharram is not just the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar — it’s also one of the holiest months in Islam. The 10th of Muharram, or Ashura, is a deeply significant day that commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who was killed in the Battle of Karbala.

Banks across India — both government and private — will remain closed. Since it is a public holiday, banking services like branch visits, cheque clearance, and cash deposits at counters will not be available.
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will also remain shut on July 6. There will be no trading in equity, derivatives, currency, or interest rate instruments. Though markets are closed on Sundays by default, the day will still be counted as a market holiday under the official list.
So if you’re a student, a trader, or someone needing to visit a bank or government office, it’s best to plan your tasks before or after July 6.
Ahead of the Muharram 2025 holiday, law and order preparations have already begun in many parts of India, especially in sensitive areas where large religious gatherings take place.
In Uttar Pradesh, authorities are taking extra precautions. In Sambhal district, over 900 people have been placed under preventive restrictions to avoid any disturbances. District Magistrate Rajendra Pensiya has warned that anyone trying to disrupt peace will face strict action, including the forfeiting of surety bonds.
The state’s Director General of Police, Rajeev Krishna, has instructed all police units not to allow any new Muharram processions or religious routes this year. He has also banned the display of weapons during processions.
To maintain peace and security, police teams will be conducting early morning patrols, checking for objectionable posters or banners, and using CCTV and drone surveillance to monitor public areas.
During the Muharram 2025 holiday, several cities across India will see processions and religious events. In places like Lucknow, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Srinagar, large crowds gather to take part in Tazia processions, which are symbolic representations of Imam Hussain’s tomb.
Some neighborhoods may witness road closures or traffic diversions due to these processions. Public announcements and advisories may also be issued in areas where mass gatherings are expected.
Apart from religious processions, many Muslim communities also offer free meals (niyaz) to the poor and distribute food and water as part of their acts of mourning and charity.
Even though the Muharram 2025 holiday falls on a Sunday, it remains a solemn and nationally recognized day of religious importance. Key services such as banks, schools, post offices, and stock markets will remain closed.
