Bigg Boss 19 in Legal Trouble: PPL Sues for Rs 2 Crore Over Unauthorized Songs

Bigg Boss 19 Update: the Salman Khan-hosted reality show that thrives on drama inside the house, is now making headlines for a controversy outside the house. Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) India, the country’s oldest copyright licensing organization, has issued a legal notice to the makers of Bigg Boss 19 for allegedly using copyrighted songs without authorization. The organization is demanding Rs 2 crore in damages and license fees.

Bigg Boss 19 Update Unauthorized Music Use in Episode 11

The legal notice, dated September 19, 2025, alleges that the makers of Bigg Boss 19 used the hit songs Chikni Chameli from Agneepath (2012) and Dhat Teri Ki from Gori Tere Pyaar Mein (2013) in Episode 11, which aired on September 3, 2025, without obtaining the mandatory public performance license.

PPL India’s notice names Endemol Shine India, the production house behind Bigg Boss, along with its directors – Thomas Gousset, Nicolas Chazarain, and Deepak Dhar – as responsible parties for this alleged infringement. The notice was served by advocate Hiten Ajay Wasan.

PPL’s Stand on Copyright Violation

A source from PPL’s legal team stated: “Both songs are licensed to Sony Music Entertainment India, whose public performance rights are exclusively administered by PPL. Since Endemol Shine India did not obtain a license under Section 30 of the Copyright Act 1957, this constitutes a wilful infringement.”

PPL has demanded Rs 2 crore in damages, along with the required license fees. They have also issued a cease-and-desist notice, warning the show’s makers against further unauthorized use of PPL-administered sound recordings.

Not PPL’s First Legal Battle

This is not the first time PPL India has taken legal action over unlicensed music usage. In 2011, the Bombay High Court restrained several event organizers and venues from playing PPL’s sound recordings without proper permission.

Founded in 1941, PPL India represents the public performance rights of India’s leading music companies, including T-Series, Sony Music, Universal Music, and Warner Music. The organization manages over 70 lakh sound recordings across multiple Indian and international languages. Any venue, broadcaster, or event organizer looking to play these songs publicly must obtain a PPL license to avoid legal complications.
