Summer has arrived, and though it brings sunshine, vacations, and fun in the sun, it also arrives with blistering heat that can drain your energy. Dehydration, heatstroke, sunburn, and exhaustion are typical problems in this season. But don’t panic—following some easy tips, you can enjoy summer while being healthy and fresh.
1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
The rule of the summer: Drink lots of water! Sweating causes your body to lose fluids and become dehydrated. Carry a water bottle and drink in between. If plain water is so boring, then: – Infused water (cucumber, lemon, mint, or berries added) – Coconut water (natural electrolytes) – Buttermilk or lassi (cooling and refreshing) – Fresh fruit juices (orange, muskmelon, or watermelon) Avoid: Excessive amounts of caffeine, alcohol, or sugary drinks—they dehydrate you quicker.
2. Eat Light & Fresh
Heavy food will weigh you down in the sun. Go for: –Fresh fruits (watermelon, cucumber, mangoes, berries) – Salads (heaped with greens, tomatoes, and cucumbers) – Curd/yogurt (assists digestion and cools down the body) – Small, frequent meals rather than large heavy ones Avoid: Fried, spicy, and oily foods—they raise body temperature.
3. Shield Your Skin from the Sun
Sunburn and tanning are two summer afflictions. Follow these steps: – Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or above) 20 mins prior to stepping out. – Wear a hat & sunglasses to protect your face and eyes. – Cover up with light, airy clothes (cotton, linen). – Aloe vera gel is great for relieving sunburn.
4. Dress Smart
Dress in loose, light-colored clothing to reflect sunlight rather than absorb it. Dark colors absorb heat and make you hotter
5. Avoid Peak Sun Hours
The sun’s rays are at their peak between 10 AM – 4 PM. If possible: – Remain inside or in shade. – Conduct outdoor activities at dawn or dusk.
6. Avoid Heat with Cooling Treatments
– Mint & coriander in food or beverages cool down the body. – Aam Panna (raw mango drink) protects against heatstroke. – Sattu drink (roasted gram flour drink) maintains water balance in the body.
7. Exercise with Sense
Exercising in hot weatherh may lead to exhaustion. Try: – Morning or evening exercise. – Indoor exercises (yoga, stretching, swimming). – Avoid strenuous exercise outdoors in the sun.
8. Be Aware of Heat-Related Illnesses
Signs of heat exhaustion (dizziness, nausea, headache) or heatstroke (high temperature, confusion, lack of sweating) require prompt care. If you are not feeling well: – Move to a cooler place. – Drink water or electrolytes. – Use a damp cloth to cool down.
9. Keep Your Home Cool
– Use curtains/blinds to block direct sunlight. – Cross-ventilation (open windows for airflow). – Cooling gadgets (fans, coolers, AC if needed).
10. Sleep Well
Hot nights can disrupt sleep. Try: – Light pajamas & cotton bedsheets. – Pre-bedtime cool shower. – Hydration (not too much before sleep).
