As the IPL 2025 competition advances, two of the league’s most iconic teams, Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), are experiencing unexpected struggles. Both teams, which have been known for their reliable performances in previous seasons, are presently struggling with form and consistency. Let us explore the reasons behind their struggles.
Mumbai Indians: Leadership Transition and Performance Concerns in ipl 2025
MI’s decision to appoint Hardik Pandya as captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma, was aimed at infusing fresh energy into the team. However, this leadership change has introduced challenges. Reports suggest internal tensions, with on-field disagreements between Pandya and senior players like Sharma, potentially affecting team cohesion and morale.
Regarding performance, MI’s batting unit, with its seniors Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma, has not delivered. The team managed disappointing scores of 155 and 160 in defeat to CSK and Gujarat Titans, respectively. Captain Pandya has stressed that batsmen need to take up more responsibility in order to get back the team’s campaign.
Also, the bowling unit has issues. The lack of such major pacers as Jasprit Bumrah has created a vacuum, and the team is not deep enough in terms of quality Indian spinners, which may prove costly on spin-friendly surfaces.
Chennai Super Kings: Team Balance and Tactical Challenges
CSK, coached by Stephen Fleming, is struggling to achieve team balance, especially at the top of the order. Overseas reinforcements such as Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway make it challenging to make selections owing to the four-foreign-player cap, resulting in lineup inconsistency.
The middle order too is a cause of concern. Although Shivam Dube has been a consistent finisher, there is over-reliance on him. The team does not have other consistent power hitters in the middle order, which is important to boost the run rate in the later part of an innings.
Additionally, CSK’s bowling attack does not seem to have depth in the seam department. Although Matheesha Pathirana has been promising, depending on a single seamer can be risky, particularly in pace-friendly conditions.
Looking Ahead
For MI, fixing internal dynamics and creating a united team atmosphere is essential. Improving batting consistency and strengthening the bowling attack, especially in the spin department, may enhance their chances.
CSK needs to set up a consistent batting order and cut down the dependence on a few stars to finish games. Strengthening seam bowling options and a well-balanced side will be key to getting past the present hurdles.
